In the early years of augmented reality's emergence, the technology quickly gained a reputation as an effective form of entertainment with Pokémon Go and Snapchat filtering video games but past this initial heroic in 2024, augmented reality continues to evolve and it’s an effective business tool.
Artificial intelligence is always closely linked to augmented reality. AI models are far more efficient at tasks like detecting faces and buildings compared to algorithms written by humans. But in 2024, augmented reality technology is evolving beyond just using AI to interpret sensor data. To support and enhance AR experiences, AI does a few important things:
Realistic Human Images and Object Search Engines: Artificial intelligence has helped AR move from simply analyzing points on a person’s face to recreating faces or other objects as realistic, 3D models will act as an avatar or asset for use in a virtual environment.
Object Recognition and Labeling: Machine vision can recognize and label objects. This is much more useful than just detection, as virtual objects can be placed on one in the real world to help facilitate AR interactions.
Text Recognition and Interpretation: Users can simply display text with their camera and interpret it in real time.
The recent explosion in generative AI models such as Chat-GPT shows great promise for the future of augmented reality. For example, tools like Spline are already being used to create and manipulate 3D objects using natural language processors and generative AI.
At MobiDev, we’ve experimented with a combination of AR and AI to solve today’s business challenges. For example, our engineers created demos of solutions for onboarding and troubleshooting Wi-Fi routers. Using a smartphone camera, users can view instructions for setting up a Wi-Fi router and see simple problems in 3D models and instructions in augmented reality Proof of concept application AR. Performs many problem solving and programming tasks using AI, e.g.
Find the router itself.
Determine whether wired access to the router is required.
By understanding the lights on the front of the router to determine the status of the device.

Although the preliminary hype of the metaverse fast waned, the evolution of it and its surrounding technology has endured. During the metaverse’s hype cycle, many interests were on decentralization, cryptocurrency, and blockchain. However, as interest in these subjects' declines, augmented fact appears to be the extra durable and reliable technology that’s frequently associated with metaverse case studies. For example, Apple’s Vision Pro headset is a testament to the capability at the horizon for AR generation.
The future of augmented social reality is marked by a gradual transition from cartoon-like avatars to more realistic-looking avatars. This allows for a more natural AR experience. For example, Apple revealed this technology in its Apple Vision Pro announcement.
These virtual avatars are called Spatial Personas that use machine learning to help display more body language and facial tracking than ever before for social AR/VR interaction for FaceTime.
It’s not just Apple. Meta Codec Avatars is working on a similar concept. In fact, this in-depth reproductive model that can be a realistic 3D face is dedicated. Working with a model in this way would make virtual avatars far more usable by consumers.
Augmented reality technology on mobile devices started out as a fun game. However, they have since evolved into an incredibly useful tool for many important applications such as transportation and research facilities. Companies are using mobile AR more than ever, especially for remote support, training, product simulation, and more.
In 2023, the total value of Augemented Reality (AR) was estimated USD 42.85 Billion and is expected to grow to USD 432.35 Billion by 2031. Across all industries, it is becoming increasingly likely that augmented reality will have a close relationship with the artificial intelligence of the future. AI’s increased proliferation and early recall seems to be still running strong right now. But its ability to improve augmented reality experiences is likely to see interest in AI begin to wane and stagnate. Especially considering that augmented reality has proven itself to be a valuable marketing tool, not just a game or entertainment.
