Driver
Favourable environmental impact of paper recycling drives the waste paper recycling market. Recycling causes 35 % less water pollution and 74 % less air pollution than making new paper. Recycling a ton of newspaper also eliminates 3m³ of garbage. As paper decompose in the ground it produces methane, which is a powerful greenhouse gas. On balance, it seems that recycling paper is still much better than producing it from fresh pulp.
Restraint
Ideally, consumers and businesses used their waste paper for recycling plants that could create new paper for forever reuse. But in reality, paper fibres degrade each time they are recycled- paper can typically be recycled no more than five times before it loses essential qualities like fibre strength and length. Different grades of paper must be handled separately during the recycling process. For example, corrugated cardboard and mixed paper are suitable for recycling into the low-grade paper used in products such as brown bags, paper boards, and egg cartons. High-grade recycled paper, required for printing, can only be made from the same high-grade paper. This inefficient waste paper collection and segregation factor hampers the growth of global waste paper recycling market worldwide.
